ABOUT JILLIAN
“I try to capture the beauty in the mundane and emphasise it, to remind people of all that is good. It is my hope that viewers will feel that wonder and joy and see the ordinary with fresh eyes.”
Jillian Cheong is a Singaporean artist who strongly believes that art should inspire hope and celebrate beauty. A turning point in her art practice was when she came down with Long Covid in 2022, with crippling fatigue, giddy spells and brain fog. This left her unable to fulfill her roles as wife, mother, daughter, and artist, and caused her to re-evaluate her way of measuring success, and to grapple with the concepts of identity, worth and value. Through this journey, she has learned to celebrate each moment and to value each individual for who they are and not what they do. These themes carry strongly in her artworks. Nature is often her source of inspiration, in both imagery and metaphor.
Jillian’s artworks are characterized by evocative use of colour and light. She particularly enjoys emphasizing the subtle details of colour in each subject, to bring out its unique character. Working primarily in acrylic, her work has also seen the use of fabric collage to explore texture, dimensionality, and heritage. She limits her choice of fabric to what is left over from sewing discards, finding joy and meaning in repurposing what was left behind to create something new.
An alumna of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the Society of Singapore Chinese Artists, she actively participates in Singapore’s art community and mental health causes. Her artworks are published in “Site.Ma”, a book that explores Singapore through the eyes of mother artists.
