Susan Olij is a Singapore-based painter whose practice is informed by a multicultural background and a lifelong engagement with travel. Working between en plein air observation and studio-based experimentation, she creates paintings that translate lived experiences into evocative compositions rich in colour, texture and gesture. Drawing inspiration from interiors, streetscapes and landscapes, Olij balances structure and spontaneity, allowing material exploration and intuitive mark-making to shape each work. Her paintings are less concerned with documenting a scene than with conveying its mood, energy and emotional resonance. Olij holds a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, and studied Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She currently teaches Travel Sketchbook Practice at LASALLE College of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in Singapore, Indonesia, France, Spain, Taiwan, Japan and Australia.

This painting doesn’t ask to be looked at — it asks to be walked into. Lush and layered, it pulls the eye toward what waits on the other side, where light thins and the forest deepens. A direct expression of Shinrin Yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing, rendered as part of an ongoing series of works on paper.
