Reimagining landscapes through color and feeling

What media of art do you work in?
I primarily work in oil and acrylic painting on canvas.

How would you describe your genre of painting?
I would describe my work as fine art with a decorative sensibility, rooted in realism but often infused with a touch of abstraction. I’m inspired by nature, seascapes, and tropical landscapes, yet I allow color and movement to slightly transform reality.

Describe your creative process.  When you begin a painting, do you have an idea of what the end result is? Do you prepare sketches first?  Do you know the colors you are going to use?
It really depends on the painting. Most of the time I begin with a clear idea of the end result - a certain mood, light, or atmosphere I want to capture. But I also allow space for experimentation. If I’m not fully satisfied, I rework the painting until it feels right.

As for color, I usually have a general palette in mind before I begin. Color plays a huge role in my work, so even if the composition evolves, the emotional direction through color is often clear from the start.

How do you hope viewers interpret your artwork?
My artworks are generally quite direct in their subject matter, but beyond the visual representation, I hope viewers connect with the feeling behind the piece.

For me, it’s not just about painting a landscape - it’s about capturing light, movement, atmosphere, and a certain emotional state. I hope people pause, feel something, and perhaps momentarily step into the scene themselves.

What is your favorite praise you have received from a client/viewer  about your work?
Of course, the biggest compliment is when someone chooses to live with my artwork.

One moment that stayed with me was when a client bought a painting because his daughter loved it so much. He even asked her whether she would prefer a well-known flower artwork by Murakami instead - and she said she much preferred mine. That felt incredibly special.

Outside of being an artist, what are some other things/hobbies you enjoy?
I’m a very curious person and enjoy many different activities. I love traveling - my goal is to visit 100 countries, and I’m currently at 56. I enjoy sports, reading, and exploring new places and cultures.

Experiencing different landscapes and environments often feeds directly into my artistic inspiration.

What is an interesting piece of trivia about you that people don’t know?
I played on a basketball team at school (despite not being very tall) and I was actually quite good at it!

Tell us about your family.
I have two children, and family is a very important part of my life. Living by the sea in Singapore, we spend a lot of time outdoors, which constantly inspires my work. My family is both my grounding force and my biggest source of joy.

What has been your strongest influence in your art career thus far?
I was fortunate to have two incredible art teachers who pushed me out of my comfort zone. They encouraged me to experiment, to think beyond technical correctness, and to develop my own artistic voice. That shift in mindset was transformative for me.

What is your vision for yourself as an artist 5 years from now?
In five years, I see myself holding several solo exhibitions and exhibiting internationally at major art fairs. I would love for my work to continue reaching new audiences and to grow both creatively and professionally on a global scale.
