Michelle Schulz

What media of art do you work in? Painting, ceramics, etc?
While I work with a variety of mediums, my heart belongs to oil paints because nothing compares to the richness that oil paints provide.

How would you describe your genre of painting?
I define my work as abstract realism.

Can you describe your creative process?  When you begin a painting, do you have an idea of what the end result is? Do you prepare sketches first?  Do you know the colors you are going to use?
My creative process relies on my intuition throughout every step of the journey, even down to which animal I will feature. I have no plan, no colour story, no end goal, just a trust in the process that each step organically leads me to the next step.

What is the message you want people to take away from your artwork?
My wish is for my work to give my collectors a deeper appreciation of our animal kingdom. I want them to wonder about them.

What is your favorite praise you have received from a client or about your work?
“I’m going to take the Picasso off the wall and hang your tiger there.” – yes, it really happened!

What are your hobbies outside of Art?
Honestly, art is my only passion, it’s my profession, but I consider it my hobby when I’m learning new skills for fun.

What is an interesting piece of trivia about you that people don’t know?
When I was 11, I wrote a children’s story that was published in a compilation of stories called “Tales For A Prince”, as the book was to be presented to Prince Harry, I had the privilege of meeting his mum, Lady Diana, at that time, still Princess Diana..

Give me one or two sentences about your family?
We have a strong connection to each other forged by great communication skills.

What has been your strongest influence in your art career thus far?
My late father’s support to push me forward every day after deciding I wanted to be a full-time artist.

Echoes-of-the-past-tiger-painting-by-michelle-schulz

Which one is your favorite artwork you have ever done and tell us why? “Echoes of the Past” – it depicts an Asian tiger sitting at the edge of the jungle here in Singapore with Marina Bay Sands in the background. I felt very strongly about painting this almost romantically so we feel the tiger’s support of Singapore’s modernization. The tiger is a part of Singapore’s heritage and should not be forgotten but fondly remembered. This also turned out to be one of my strongest images as an original painting as it created a demand for tiger painting commissions.

Which is one of your most recent works and tell me how you would describe the artwork to a potential buyer.
“Abstract Horse” – this is simply a celebration of daring to be different. Why be vanilla when you can be any colour you want?
